Colour trios and contours in watercolours

Practise paintings of Martine, Roxane and Geneviève

The Aquarellistas are still enthusiastically following the directions of Anna Karin, who unfortunately couldn't make it in person last Tuesday. (Travelling back to Sweden for Christmas and New Years' celebrations). Our challenge was to create a picture (hanging fruit) using only three colours. Of these colours at least one should give good contours, a property that we used to give the whole a 'mosaic' appearance. To achieve that we used the 'empty spaces' (the background) as separate surfaces, the contours reinforce that effect.

This was the demo, created with Opera Rose, Green Gold and Payne's Grey. Visible contours around every surface or 'compartment'...

Work in progress by Roxane, with the same principles, colours used: Yellow Ochre, Turquoise and Alizarin Crimson

Martine used French Ultramarine, Raw Sienna, Raw Umber - and salt!

Sue's painting as always superb, with wonderful effects and an amazing colour combination of Phtalo Turquoise, Raw Sienna and Opera Rose

Shirley used Green Gold, Opera Rose and Payne's Grey to create this lovely painting

Our loyal correspondent in Bretagne, Michelle, has created this unbelievably sunny and happy painting, using our 'method'. She wishes you all the best for the new year!

In the meantime... more vases... It is such fun to paint them!!

Sue tried 2 vases and loved the principle. I am so fond of these results, they are very much like 'your first ceramics experience'. The one above has such a happy shape! and the next is simply perfect... Both painted in a combination of Phtalo Turquoise, Opera Rose and Raw Sienna... And then a bit of salt.

Demo II - with a tiny bit of Opera Rose, Green Gold and a lot of Payne's Grey...if you are trying this out: it gets better every time!

Rosemarie painted hers with a little angel on top, how sweet!
