Turbans painted in Watercolours

Amazing colours, and a wise personality in this portrait, from the back, by Michèle. I am enthusiastic about this watercolour! I love the khaki shirt so much - as well as the folds in the turban and the contrast.

The watercolour challenge of last week was 'Paint a Turban' and the Aquarellistas clearly liked this! all Turbans have very good darks and lights, folds - and (all people wearing them) have a lot of expression. Look and enjoy!

For those of you who missed the 'Making of here's a link

Another strong and silent personality, seen from the back, with incredible sunlight. This one's rom Switzerland, painted by Ingrid from the LA group. Absolutely stunning! He is watching the desert and in deep thought. Well done on the light, strong shadows rule!

This little man with impressive beard and turban was painted by Judith. He is listening, and really feels your pain. I love his expression and the way she painted his eyes. Full of compassion.

Sonya painted a woman with turban. My interpretation is that she is listening to a sad story or song and really feels it. Her eyes are so empathic, if you have a sad story and you look at her for some time it is quite comforting

From England - Barbara Brierly (she is in the LA group) and although she is quite critical of herself and hasn't used watercolours for a while, she did send the picture. I agree that it needs some more contrast - but it is an interesting bloke for sure! Right out of the sand storm... Keep 'em coming Barbara!

Rosemarie paints with us from Holland. and she too created a portrait with a lot of feeling. The expression is both dignified and full of compassion and his eyes understand.

Brenda (from Isle of Man where they have no Covid) has painted a man with a turban who oversees his garden. He is sitting there quietly contemplating life and his grandchildren (I love all that interpreting)

And this just in: Celina's original take on the subject. But the challenge is just as strong, with the folds and the lights.Since portraits are not something Celina (thinks she) is good at, there is extra difficulty. In my opinion it is a great job - and I am confident that the final picture will be very cool. We'll see, next week!

In the Meantime...

There is a lot of watercolour work going on in Switzerland, bravo! Above Ingrid's 'Glowing Tulips' a perfect example of how good contrast works! and below a breathtakingly beautiful spoon, richly worked with gold. Really good and so full of detail!

Randi has painted all kinds of wonderful locations. If you can't travel, travel in your mind - or in watercolours! Above, her own house - always a good start of your trip.
And then the Sidney Opera house, from one of her own photos. It has a lot of passion, that painting!

This lighthouse, also by Randi, is painted from a picture her niece took, and I wonder where it is. I think I painted this same lighthouse (light-) years ago. If this is the case I will let you know next week and try to find it!
