The Colour Brown (in Watercolours)

O my - this is such a fantastic portrait of Mr Sunny Boy Evans, painted by Sandra who says it is about half finished. She is the artist - but if I had a say I would say STOP. Because it is so complete, so spontaneous, so deep. Knowing Sandra, she will probably do very interesting things to it, but I find this raw version very impressive. Just sayin'...

It sounds like a boring colour, Brown, but in watercolour it has so many different shades, that alone is interesting. The Aquarellistas, from all those different parts of the world, sent in their works and showed that there are endless possibilities.
And in the meantime, there were other sources of inspiration as well... Look and be inspired! If you missed it, here's the video once more

Celina took the colour Brown as a lead for her 'doodle'. I love the way she has combined watercolours & ink and graphics, geometric shapes and fantasy shapes into a balanced composition - with white as small but clear points of attention. The work below is a multimedia of collage, ink, watercolour crayons, gouache. I am especially fond of the 'scribble' left middle side, and it would be such a good idea to do this completely in watercolours. Will be a subject this month!

Anna Karin watercolour is an exercise to show the difference between mixing colours and layering them. I understand why she calls it 'peculiar' yet it is an interesting experiment, and it explains a lot. And that is just as important - or probably even more as creating a 'pretty picture'

You probably recognise the loose style of this gorgeous set of eggs! They are so light and natural and you can see how all these beautiful and completely different browns are created. So well done Sue. As for the composition, have you noticed the balance of the brown egg on top... perfect.

Lots of different shades of brown in this painting by Michèle. Her paintings often tell fine little stories, and this one is a good example. There are shoemaker-tools, well painted by the way! ANd the personal part, the boot. So shiny (and dark! well done 😀) at the nose, is the rest not yet polished? Or is it just repaired and does the owner only polish what he can see...

In the meantime...

Brown Pussy willow sticks by Cari from the UK! She clearly sees the Spring in her surroundings, like we do too and it is wonderfully poetic!

And Judith - after creating the above painting in this gorgeous warm orangy red, with silky smooth transparency, went further in her search for 'what happens' with transparency, perspective, negative space, geometric shapes and contrast. And more... Can't wait to see the developments!

NB: If you want your artwork (watercolour or theme-) posted in this blog please make sure you send it before Monday 3pm! Cheers, Marina
