The Hangar Art Contest: ELEMENTS

The Elements 'Eau, Air, Feu et Terre' (Water, Air, Fire and Earth)

The atelier where the Aqarellistas work on Tuesdays, Le Hangar,  has an exciting contest going on: participants have to create artwork with 'the Elements' as theme. Such a fantastic and  broad subject!

We have already worked a bit on it. Below are a couple of examples (just the beginning) of how the Aquarellistas interpret their elements. If you are interested: The contest is for Hangar members (membership costs 60€). ends on 30 April. The winner will receive a free membership for next year and lots of honour and publicity, like: the first page in the catalogue, a prominent place in our exhibition, and dedicated posts on the Hangar's social media!!

Geneviève bravely experimented with a first element - fire. The painting on the left was not what she was looking for, so she 'washed' it and will continue next time!

Shirley worked on a diversity of versions of  the element 'Water' using the straw-technique. This one was our favoutite, Certainly interesting enough for the contest. Yet who knows, she may change or add .to it.

Thecla also experiments with Elements, les literally! In this first example, she investigated ways to paint footsteps in the wet sand, with bright sunlight, without working too detailed...

Michèle's fire in the snow looks so good - it contains all sorts of elements, the seasons, the temperature and plain fire. This is another very good way to think about the subject. Love it!

Shirley created a lot of paintings and she wasn't happy with everything. But this one we all agreed is very very special. It is not finished but those 'white left-outs' are already amazing and something to interpret! Slowly falling shreds of paper? feathers? The weather element 'wind' as in 'breeze'... Check in later for more...

In the meantime....the work with paint and straws to randomly blow it over the artwork continued!

The Thursday group in Atelier M is hooked too..

This is Jutta's moon, with cute rabbit that is looking at it. Also mystery and lots of possibilites to interpret. Like 'the eye of a big predator that stares at the rabbit'

Geneviève created this
and it is really great, with these colours and the light. Funny to see how popular this method is - even though you have little control!

Sonya painted a background, including some of the undergrowth, very wet-in-wet. After it had dried, some of the tree-trunks wet-on-dry with a brush, and finally the finishing touch - the details - with a straw and look what has come out! Fabulous!

Marie used the straw-technique in similar colours and ways of working as Sonya - so wonderful to see how different they come out. Imagination is so personal! Marie had time left to do a little experiment that has come out as a Japanese flower painting.

Anna put most of her time in a beautiful sky and a yellow supermoon. The dark branches in the foreground give the painting an ominous character,  interesting!

Sue's painting has a similar atmosphere. She also used a lighter tone for the trees that are more in the background. They have become friendly giants (in my eyes)

And last but not least:

When in the UK Sue painted with us as well and I really want to show the 'Spiral' because it is So attractive with these colours, and the plant in Anna-Karin colours and with a  very beautiful Saunders Watermark on the right!

fabulous and actually quite controlled painting by Judith! She had to experiment a bit less than usual because of this commission... Well done, lucky new owners!

Rosemarie, working with us from Holland, painted her amaryllis, bulb and flower.  I seriously love everything about it, it is simple, recognizable and  still has the mystery of the background - and have you looked at that bulb?

Celina finished the friendliest tiger in the world, with the softest fur. Amazing how perfect she achieved her goal - and despite the first impression of complete symmetry - Just have another look!
